Thank you :) I'm glad you thought it read like a poem, that was kind of the feeling I wanted to give. And yes, the whole thing does indeed reference Wide Sargasso Sea - I read it for book group and the book is extremely sensual with colour and description and you get lost in it, so this was my homage to that sort of style (usually I write very differently!) since I wanted the 'otherworldly' feel of fairies/psychopomps.
'Coulibri' means 'hummingbird', so it's a reference to the swiftness of life and beauty. Basically the fic is about the 2007 car crash. Jongwoon is a psychopomp (fairy guide that helps people over to the other side). The tropical island is a kind of limbo where Kyu waits while his life hangs in the balance. The fact that he can see and interact with Jongwoon means he's dying. The locked room is the truth of what's happening to him; Jongwoon gives him the choice of surviving and going back to reality or staying with him forever.
